| Hot-Air Engines. (Ref:B0004) |
Full-size hot-air engines are normally seen only in museums or private collections. Models are plentiful but original engines from the late nineteenth century are rare. The Waterworks Museum is thought to be unique in having two Hayward-Tyler engines on working display. This book explains the history of these elusive engines, and how and why they were developed. A simplified explanation about how they work is given together with a fuller description of the thermodynamic principles involved. The stories of the pioneer engineers who set out to produce ‘engines without boilers’ complete the picture. The book is fully illustrated with historic images, explanatory diagrams and modern photography. 16 pages, gloss art paper and covers, high quality images. Publisher: Waterworks Museum – Hereford.

| Wye Valley. (Ref:D0001) |
The film tells the story of the River Wye, from its source on Mount Plynlimon to its convergence with the River Severn, and its influence on places and people along the way. The Wye and its tributaries form the Wye Valley, an area of great scenic beauty. In addition the river system provides the drinking water not only for local inhabitants but also for the citizens of Birmingham, many kilometres away. The Wye is one of Britain’s finest rivers and this film brings alive the many aspects which make it so. The film covers the geography of the river and its impact on the people along its route. The historic story extends from the cave dwellers along its banks, through Norman castle building and a Cistercian abbey, to the industrial revolution and present-day uses. It is intended to provide everyone with an enjoyable journey along a river which has been both a transport route and an historic boundary. The whole story is told in beautiful images, words and music. DVD published by the Waterworks Museum – Hereford. A Catcher Media production.

| Water on Tap. (Ref:B0002) |
For centuries the people of Herefordshire took their drinking water directly from springs and brooks. As everywhere else, contamination in the early Victorian period led to epidemics of water-borne diseases. Proper piped water supplies were demanded. This book explains their rapid development in Hereford city from 1854. The five market towns followed but the spread of piped water to the rural areas took almost another hundred years. The book completes the story with Herefordshire’s ultra modern water supplies today. The book is fully illustrated with high quality historic images and modern photography. 32 pages, gloss art paper, semi-stiff cover. Publisher: Waterworks Museum – Hereford

| Hot-Air Engines. (Ref:D0003) |
Boiler explosions were the curse of the Industrial Revolution. The Reverend Robert Stirling in Scotland and John Ericsson in Sweden developed engines, at broadly the same time, which used only heated air. The film explores the pioneering work and development of hot-air engines. Using animation, it provides a simplified explanation of their working principles. Full-size hot-air engines are normally seen only in museums or private engine collections. Models are plentiful but original engines from the late 19th century are rare. The Waterworks Museum is unique in having two Hayward-Tyler hot-air engines on working display, both of which are shown operating and pumping water in the film. Hot-air engines flourished briefly towards the close of the 19th century but were rapidly overtaken by the development of internal combustion engines and then electric motors. The film brings these elusive engines alive again. DVD published by the Waterworks Museum – Hereford. A Catcher Media production.

| Water on Tap. (Ref:D0002) |
For centuries the people of Herefordshire took their drinking water directly from springs and brooks. Contamination in the early Victorian period led to epidemics of water-borne diseases. From the 1850s there were piped water supplies in Hereford city. The five market towns followed but many rural areas were left behind. The Herefordshire Water Board took charge in 1960. The Board made sure that all parts of this sparsely populated county received piped water. From 1974 water supplies were taken under the wing of Welsh Water and further modernisation followed. The film illustrates this fascinating story, set against the beautiful Herefordshire countryside, by showing the historic engines and pumps actually working. The story is completed by a full tour of a modern water-treatment works in the county. We all turn on the taps in our kitchens and expect pure water to flow. This film explains the history and technology which makes this everyday action possible. DVD published by the Waterworks Museum – Hereford. A Catcher Media production.
